Vacancy: Project Engineering Manager - Railway
A possible project for you could be that one of our current signalling systems in the field needs a software upgrade of a subsystem to the latest version. Parallel a new set of specific requirements from the customer needs to be implemented. These new requirements will impact existing use cases and therefore other subsystems will be affected as well. That’s why validation and verification activities on system level are an important part of this project scope. Finally, because it is a safety signalling system all safety documentation needs to be in place and assessed.
The challenge is to coordinate the different countries involved. Additionally within the scope of this project some knowledge transfers between countries need to be coordinated as well.
You will be responsible for the project management of the engineering within a project. Your team consists of System Engineering, Verification & Validation (V&V) engineering and Safety Management. Other stakeholders could be contact persons at different sites in e.g. Sweden, Poland, Germany, Belgium or France and external suppliers like e.g. Independent Safety Assessor, but also the customer.
You will be the linking pin and maintain the right balance between sales, engineering and quality.
Alstom has been one of the main players in the development and implementation of the ERTMS train protection system for the European railways with solutions on the Betuweroute, Hanzelijn and the corridor Amsterdam-Utrecht. It has also equipped more than 180 trains with this ERTMS solution.
In terms of urban signaling, Alstom has implemented a full CBTC system (Urbalis) for the Amsterdam metro (North/South line and Ring line), a complete signalling system for the Rotterdam metro, as well a tram signalling system In Utrecht with the Uithoflijn.
- The organization of the engineering activities in a project according to established Quality / Cost / Delivery agreements
- Complete verification & validation of a project solution. The activity is aimed at making the customer requirements demonstrable and managing the project solution.
- Leading the technical contractual scope of the project
- Verification of the Project Safety Case and related products.
- Assigning work packages to the project engineering team and following up and planning of the engineering activities.
- The distribution and management of all technical documents to the project core team members for industrialization, sourcing, installation, testing and commissioning.
- Managing the outsourced work packages.
- Project quality, cost and delivery commitment
- Progress of Project Specification, including Design documents & Projects V&V documents approval status
- Maturity of the Project requirements (it covers “traceability & coverage of requirements by V&V”
- Application of the Engineering management plan
- Assessment results based on internal audits and process inspections (applied in the project)
You will mainly work within small projects teams. You will be responsible for the project management of the engineering within a project. Your team consists of System Engineering, V&V engineering and Safety Management. Other stakeholders could be contact persons at different sites in e.g. Sweden, Poland, Germany, Belgium or France and external suppliers like e.g. Independent Safety Assessor, but also the customer. You will report to Neill Sweet (Engineering Team Leader).

You have project management experience in a technical environment (engineering). Furthermore, you are familiar with SIL-4 functionalities.
Of course, European signalling experience is preferred, just as, contracting, software projects and safety cases experience)
